No parent and family should have to face the heartbreak of losing a child alone. We can’t take away their heartache, but we can help them through it.
The loss of a child changes everything. Life as you knew it will never be quite the same, and while the world around you carries on, finding a way forward can feel impossible.
At The Henry Nowak Foundation, we believe that no family should have to navigate that journey alone.
Born from unimaginable heartbreak and inspired by the life of Henry Nowak, our Foundation has been created with one simple purpose: to be there for families when they need it most, and for as long as they need us.
We know that grief doesn’t follow a timetable. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, no set path to follow and no moment when everything suddenly becomes okay. Sometimes you need someone to talk to. Sometimes you need a change of scenery. And sometimes, you just need a quiet place, a cuppa and someone who understands without you having to explain.
That’s what we want to create.
Starting Small, Dreaming Big
Our journey begins in Thurrock, supporting bereaved families within our local community and bringing people together through compassion, understanding and shared experiences.
As we grow, our ambition is to offer a range of meaningful support for the whole family, including access to professional bereavement counselling, therapeutic activities, opportunities to connect with other families, and weekend retreats where loved ones can spend precious time together away from the pressures of everyday life.
We want to create opportunities for families to talk, laugh, cry, remember and simply be themselves, without judgement or expectation.
Whether someone needs a listening ear, practical support, a moment of peace or the comfort of knowing that somebody else truly understands, we want them to know there is somewhere they can turn.
Our Dream — Henry’s Barn
Our long-term dream is to create Henry’s Barn, a peaceful and welcoming sanctuary for families who have experienced the loss of a child, whatever their age.
Surrounded by nature and away from the demands of everyday life, Henry’s Barn will be somewhere families can come together, find comfort in shared experiences and take time for themselves and one another.
A place for counselling, therapeutic activities, reflection and connection. Somewhere to enjoy a cuppa, sit quietly in the garden, share memories or simply enjoy being together as a family.
There will be no expectations, no pressure to talk and no need to put on a brave face.
Just a safe, understanding environment where families can feel supported, find moments of peace and know that they belong.
A sanctuary built from love, where every family matters and every child is remembered.
Growing Together
We know that creating something meaningful takes time, and we cannot do it alone.
Our ambition is to begin by making a difference to families in Thurrock, gradually extending our support across Essex and, one day, reaching families much further afield.
Every donation, every fundraising event, every volunteer and every act of kindness will help us take another step towards that dream.
Henry’s life is the inspiration behind our Foundation, but its future is about every family we hope to support and every child whose memory deserves to live on.
We cannot take away the pain of losing a child. But together, we can help make sure that families don’t have to carry that pain alone.
